Congratulations! You’ve just had a baby—and have a million things you want to get just right for them.
Mold prevention is a small but important part of being a parent, and if you’ve never thought you had to deal with it, this short list will tell you everything you need to know in order to detect and prevent mold as far as your newborn, baby, or toddler is concerned.
1. Kids are more sensitive to mold than most adults are.
Mold is a type of fungus that thrives in damp environments. It can release tiny spores into the air, which can be inhaled. Infants and young children are more vulnerable to these spores because their immune systems are still developing, making them more susceptible to respiratory issues and allergic reactions.
2. Kids should never sleep in a moldy room, or on a moldy mattress.
Newborns, babies, and toddlers should never sleep in a room with visible mold. Mold can irritate their lungs and lead to breathing problems. Regularly check the nursery for any signs of mold, especially in corners, on walls, or around windows where moisture may accumulate.
3. Mattress covers will help you prevent mold.
Babies and toddlers often have accidents, whether from diaper leaks or spills. Using a waterproof mattress cover can protect the mattress from moisture. If the mattress does get wet, dry it thoroughly and quickly to prevent mold growth. Consider using absorbent bedding that can be easily washed.
4. Indoor humidity matters in mold prevention.
Mold thrives in humid conditions. Aim to keep indoor humidity levels below 50%. You can measure humidity with a hygrometer. If humidity is high, use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture in the air, especially in areas like basements, bathrooms, or kitchens.
5. Cleaning and dusting are a dynamite duo.
Clean areas prone to moisture regularly. This includes wiping down surfaces in bathrooms and kitchens where mold can grow. Use non-toxic cleaning products to remove any visible mold. Make sure to dry surfaces well after cleaning to prevent mold from returning.
6. A/C mold can affect breathing, sleeping, and even mood.
Mold can grow in air conditioning units, humidifiers, and even vacuum cleaners. Regularly clean and maintain these appliances. Change filters as recommended, and ensure that any water reservoirs in humidifiers are emptied and dried out regularly to prevent mold buildup.
7. Mold can cause allergy-like symptoms.
Be aware of any signs that your child may be reacting to mold. Symptoms can include coughing, sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and skin rashes. If you notice these symptoms, especially when indoors, check for mold and consult a pediatrician if symptoms persist.
8. Both new and old homes can have mold problems.
If you live in an older home or one that has experienced water damage (like leaks or flooding), inspect for mold in hidden areas. Look behind walls, under carpets, and in attics or basements. If you find mold, it’s important to address it promptly to protect your child’s health.
