Meet Aspen: Man's Best Friend & Mold's Worst Enemy — Only at MoldSolutions.com

Not every mold inspection or mold remediation job requires a Mold Detecting K9. But for those that do, Mold Solutions has the best in class, our beloved Aspen. Mold detection dogs can speed up inspection and detection, and help people who are particularly sensitive to mold or mycotoxins, because they act as an independent and impartial "3rd party." Mold Dogs don't entirely replace traditional mold detection methods—like moisture meters, manual inspections, or testing—but used smartly in combination and where needed, they're a tremendous asset to our Tampa Bay clients.

They've helped safeguard us against drugs, bombs, mold and more for more than 20 years.

How Mold Detection Dogs Work

Mold detection dogs undergo rigorous training to recognize the unique odors produced by various types of mold. During an inspection, our K9 will systematically sniff the targeted areas, alerting their handler to the presence of mold by displaying a specific behavior, such as sitting or pointing. This allows our team to focus on the affected areas and develop a targeted remediation plan.

At Mold Solutions, we’re committed to providing our clients with the most advanced and reliable mold detection services. With the help of our mold detection dog, Aspen, we can quickly and accurately identify mold growth, allowing us to develop targeted remediation plans that restore your property to a healthy  and habitable state. Contact us today to schedule an inspection and experience the benefits of our K9 mold detection services firsthand.

What You Need to Know

Mold Solutions • Tampa Bay, FL

Yes, mold detection dogs have a higher accuracy rate compared to visual inspections and moisture meters, as they can detect mold growth that may be hidden behind walls, under floors, or in other hard-to-reach areas.

The duration of an inspection varies depending on the size and complexity of the property. However, mold detection dogs can typically cover a large area much faster than manual inspections, saving valuable time.

While mold detection dogs are trained to identify the presence of mold, they can’t distinguish between specific types of mold. Or more accurately, they likely can, but lack the means of telling us which species and subspecies of mold was found.). Once mold is detected by our mold dog, our remediation team will either collect samples for lab analysis to determine the exact type of mold present, or will simply uncover, remove and remediate the mold found. (Note that the CDC doesn’t recommend mold testing per se, but that many of our clients, understandably, wish to have testing done.)

Here’s what the CDC says re Mold Testing in full: “CDC does not recommend mold testing.

“The health effects of mold are different for different people so you cannot rely on sampling and culturing to know whether someone might become sick. No matter what type of mold is present, you need to remove it.

“Also, good sampling for mold can be expensive, and there are no set standards for what is and what is not an acceptable quantity of different kinds of mold in a home. The best thing you can do is to safely remove the mold and prevent future mold growth.” – U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “Mold

Absolutely. Mold detection dog inspections are non-invasive and do not require any damage to the property. Our K9 is trained to work safely and efficiently, ensuring a thorough inspection without disrupting the occupants or their belongings.

Great question! Our K9 Mold Detector spends the vast majority of her time far away from mold, mildew and anything like it! She’s kept happy and healthy and will only ever enter a moldy home for the purpose of inspecting or unearthing hidden mold. When she spots an area where mold growth is highly likely, she’ll signal us to it. At which point, she’s out of the home and away from the mold again. Because she’s so infrequently in mold-infested spaces, she can keep helping us detect them while remaining perfectly healthy.

No special preparation is usually required before Apsen (our mold detection dog) enters most homes. If you have cats or other at-home pets, they’ll be best secured somewhere outside of the house temporarily.

“A study presented at an indoor air quality conference sponsored by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers says mold dogs can be "a very successful method for locating hidden microbial damage" but cautions that the dogs must be "correctly trained, led and interpreted." - Tampa Bay Times, "Cultivating a Nose for Mold" Feb. 5, 2005
